At a glance
Since the 1920s the Greek government planned for a regeneration of the Riviera. In 1957, the plan for the development of the Athens Riviera started with the creation of Asteria in Glyfada and the area started gradually to become popular among the Athenians. Today many marinas, restaurants, resorts are located in this area of Athens and in the coming years the “Hellenikon Metropolitan Park” will be ready, with a casino along with luxury hotels and conference and recreation facilities on the disused airport, as a way to attract more visitors in the Athens Riviera.
Location & Climate
Athens Riviera is the coastal area in the southern suburbs of Athens, from Piraeus to Sounio, facing Saronic Gulf. It is located about 16 km (9.9 mi) from downtown Athens stretching from the southern suburbs of Athens to the southernmost point of Attica, Cape Sounio. The dominant feature of Athens' climate is alternation between Mediterranean (prolonged hot and dry) summers and mild to cool winters with moderate rainfall
Culture
The South-Eastern coastline of the Athens peninsula is home to a myriad of beaches, coves, marinas and parks, each with its own quirks and charms. Today the "Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center", the "Floating Fairy Museum", the "Floating Naval Museum Battleship G. Averof" and the "Temple of Apollo Zostiras" which have been excavated and can be viewed inside the public Astir Hotel beach are the most important places one can visit on the Athenian Riviera.
Athens Riviera tour
Your trip will begin from your hotel and you will have your first stop at "Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center", a multifunctional, environmentally sustainable centre of education, art, sports and recreation. Then you'll have a stop at "Flisvos Marina" where you may visit the “Neraida Floating Museum” and the “Floating Naval Museum Battleship G. Averof” or you can simply browse the marina's many restaurants and cοffee shops. Next stop at Glyfada, the South suburb of Athens well known for its vibrant atmosphere, lively entertainment, interesting shopping and of course its beach and nightlife. After that you’ll be driven through the coastline to Vouliagmeni where you may visit “Lake of Vouliagmeni” or you can simply have a drink at many beach clubs in Kavouri or just enjoy the sunset at “Laimos”. On the way back you'll be driven through narrow streets of Plaka (old town of Athens) where the life never ends…
