Half day tour to Cape Sounion

Mythology
According to Greek Mythology, Cape Sounio is the spot where Aegeus, King of Athens, believing that his only son Prince Theseus died trying to kill the Minotaur, because he forgot to change the black sails to white ones on his boat, leapt to his death over the cliff, thus giving his name to the Aegean Sea.
The Athenians, in order to honour Aegeus even more, placed him among the gods of the sea and declared him as son of god Poseidon

Cape Sounion
Cape Sounion is a promontory located 69 kilometres (43 mi) southeast of Athens. The wind-swept Cape Sounio was an obvious choice for a sanctuary of Poseidon, where the sailors might offer a last sacrifice to appease the mighty God of the Sea before leaving the comparative safety of the Saronic Gulf for the perils of the open Aegean Sea.

Temple of Poseidon
In a maritime country like Greece, the god of the sea occupied a high position in the divine hierarchy. The temple of Poseidon was constructed in 444–440 BC, over the ruins of a temple dating from the Archaic period. It is perched above the sea at a height of almost 60 metres (200 ft).
